Overview
Cocrystal lutein is a crystalline powder produced through the cocrystallization of natural pigment lutein and an edible coformer. The product has high content, excellent physicochemical stability, enhanced solubility and bioavailability, and hence is suitable for various formulations, such as soft capsules, hard capsules, tablets, and gummies.
Why Cocrystal Lutein?
Lutein exhibits extremely poor stability, highly sensitive to light and oxygen. It also has low solubility (< 1 μg/mL), insoluble in either water or oil, resulting in a bioavailability less than 10%. As a result, the application of lutein in ordinary food, health food, and animal feed is significantly limited.
Lutein ester, commonly used as an alternative of lutein in marketed products, offers greater stability. However, it can’t be directly absorbed by the body; they require enzymatic breakdown and conversion for absorption. This process leads to low absorption and poor utilization efficiency.
Cocrystal lutein is a cocrystal of natural pigment lutein and an edible coformer. The product does not require microencapsulation and thus offers greatly improved in drug loading (generally 5% vs 60%) and flowability.
Cocrystal lutein stands out due to its superior stability, higher dissolution rates, and enhanced absorption rate. Specifically, it offers a 7-fold increase in absorption compared to lutein crystals from other sources.
